“Sally’s classes are fun and relaxed”

Sally is a creative, spontaneous and encouraging artist, calligrapher and teacher. She is a valued member of the Lettering Arts Guild of Red Deer, both as a member, board member and instructor.  Sally contributes her time, energy and enthusiasm to any project that she takes on.  I always enjoy taking Sally’s classes.  They are fun and relaxed.  We each create something that is unique and leave with a project that we are proud to display or give as a gift.

Rhapsody Blue by Sally Towers-Sybblis

“The custom painting that Sally created for me is simply AMAZING!”

As the owner of a private retreat company I have commissioned Sally a few times to design, and paint the silk screens that appear on my promotional posters and retreat T-shirts – everybody always loves them and comments on the beautiful artwork. When I started designing stonework jewelry, meditation beads & custom essential oils this year, I knew I wanted a signature sign that I could display at Artisan markets so that my clients can always find me and I would stand out from the usual venders. Sally and I met again and we looked at some of my past projects, her current work and discussed “the feel” I was looking for. The custom painting that Sally created for me is simply AMAZING! I use it as a sign for my booth and I have people try to buy it off me all the time!  The best part is that when I am not at markets, my “sign” is so beautiful that it hangs in my living room. ”

Water Lilies Watercolour by Sally Towers-Sybblis

“I have thoroughly enjoyed Sally’s gentle and constructive methods of teaching”

I have been taking water colour classes from Sally for a year and a half now, and have thoroughly enjoyed Sally’s gentle and constructive methods of teaching. When I first began to paint with Sally, I was a complete beginner and so a little hesitant, but through her positive and instructive input I soon felt at ease and began to gain some confidence in my abilities to work with this medium.

Sally follows the same pattern for each class, providing a template and demonstrations of colour and techniques interspersed with personal painting time where each student focuses on their own work.  At any time she is available for guidance as needed, but leaves creative decisions up to each student. It is always fun to see what different concepts and creative impulses each person brings to their own work, and Sally’s constructive evaluation helps us to make the best of our various skills.

Sally has endless ideas for painting subjects but is also responsive to class feedback and suggestions, resulting in new and interesting (and sometimes challenging) subject matter each week. I enjoy testing myself as we experiment with different types of paintings, and new techniques, and find the three hours to be instructive but also restful and restorative; a really good combination!

“She freely shares her knowledge”

I do better with written words than orally so these are my thoughts regarding the class and your teaching:

I first ran across Sally’s delightful work about 4 years ago. I was instantly taken with her impeccable skill and composition. I have finally been able to take a class with her this summer and she did not disappoint. She freely shares her knowledge in a light and joyous manner and delivers a lot of bang for the buck. In spite of all of the learning opportunities the class is conducted in a relaxed manner. Sally willingly assists students and goes beyond what I would expect from a teacher. I truly hope that this was not my last class with Sally. I know that she possesses a wealth of knowledge that I would like to mine.

“She was totally invested in providing us with the BEST experience possible”

Dear Ms. Howdle:

Now that your Series Summer Arts School has come to a close, I suspect you will be conducting the requisite evaluation process and begin the planning process for next year’s programs.

Although I filled out the evaluation questionnaire on the last day of my class, I am compelled to write a special letter to you to say how much I (and all my classmates) enjoyed our week with Sally Towers-Sybblis. We were a small group, but I’m sure we had the most fun and learned the most new techniques of any other class. We were all beginners and Sally absolutely inundated us (in a good way) with tons of ideas and techniques to use in our art journaling practices going forward.

She was totally invested in providing us with the best experience possible and she succeeded in every aspect of that goal.

I can hardly wait for next year’s catalogue to be published and I hope Sally is doing another art journal class. I will be the first to sign up, and hopefully this time I can bring some friends with me. Actually, truth be told, I hope she is doing two weeks of instruction, one week of art journaling and one week of water colour — I’ll be the first to sign up for both of them.
